STUDY REVIEWS GREEN LABELING PROGRAMS
This month's issue of the Virginia Environmental Law Journal will publish Roger D. Wynne's study comparing the methods and missions of Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) and GreenSeal, two US product labeling programs. According to the study, a combined effort applying some of SCS's life cycle thinking to Green Seal's open certification process could be an ideal mix. -The Green Business Letter, January 1995, p. 2.

TOWN OF BANFF THREATENS QUALITY OF NATIONAL PARK
Banff, Alberta-the town within the park-is becoming more of a city. Violating Canada's strict park laws, development in the town has been more rapid than any area outside Banff. Although only 7,000 people reside full-time in Banff, the collective impact of large homes and shopping malls is greater than that of all the tourists combined. Between 1986 and 1994 shopping mall space doubled, while elsewhere in Canada shopping space rose by only 15 percent. -The EarthTimes, December 31, 1994, p. 5, by Adam Rogers.

DOUBLE-WALL GLAZING SYSTEMS
Although uncommon, double-wall glazing systems improve thermal and acoustic envelope performance. Double-wall glazing assemblies typically consist of a single layer of external glass and an interior layer of double glazing, or vice versa. The space between creates an insulating air buffer in winter and a thermal chimney in the summer.-Architecture, January 1995, p. 115, by Raul A. Barreneche.

MODEL TRANSFORMATION
Chattanooga, Tennessee-once infamous for its air pollution-is now among the cities with the best air quality in the Southeast. According to a representative of the United Nations University, the university will likely select Chattanooga as the site for a zero-emissions manufacturing research institute. The city now boasts the world's largest freshwater aquarium, the country's largest electric bus fleet, and an expansive greenways and land trust program. -Associated Press, January 18, 1995, by Michele Williams.

WINDOW STANDARDS
Green Seal, an environmental product labeling organization, has published standards for environmentally preferable windows and retrofittable window films. The standards address the overall heat transfer coefficient or U-value, the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), the Visible Light Transmission Coefficient (VLTC), and the Air Leakage Rate. -Interiors, December 1994, p. 70, by Michael Wagner.
